HAITI - KAN ETWAL

by Worldwide Orphans

Martin Brouillette

My experience working with WWO has filled me with a profound sense of responsibility for the children of Kenscoff, Haiti. As a volunteer at Kan Etwal (Camp of Stars) – a summer camp for children living with HIV – I witnessed firsthand the impact WWO is having on the lives of children.

I am a WWO Arts Ambassador and serve as an art workshop mentor. In my workshop, I promote personal expression through art, allowing children to communicate feelings and emotions and build self-worth and self-acceptance, all while teaching them to trust what makes them unique. As a professional artist with a diploma in Fine Arts from UQ
ÀM and a studio practice in London, I utilize techniques gained through years of experience and employ different art media with the goal of allowing children to express themselves in a playful, trusting, and safe environment.

I'm inviting you to support WWO in their efforts to both strengthen their summer camp program and improve their after-school program. Click here to find out more about my experiences at Kan Etwal and about WWO's work in Haiti.

Summer is here and just like you we are gearing up for a season of camp, sport, and lots of fun outdoor activities with our kids! In partnership with SeriousFun Children’s Network, Kan Etwal (Camp of Stars) is a one-week summer camp experience for children and youth living with HIV. The impact and experience of spending one week away from home, making new friends, being challenged, and discovering individual strengths has an amazing and wonderful transformative power. For the kids in Kan Etwal, the camp experience builds self-esteem and resilience and spotlights the significance of healthy habits. It even helps turn the daily medication routine into a fun and celebratory experience, improving their adherence to this regimen even after camp ends.

In a study conducted by San Diego State University, children who attend our camp program show measurable improvements in HIV knowledge and habits after camp. This was especially true of those campers who needed the most help in adopting healthy behaviors and improving their psychosocial wellbeing. Those children who scored the lowest on a knowledge and habit test prior to attending camp, showed an 84% increase in knowledge of how to manage their HIV. Additionally, for all campers, there was an 87% increase in compliance in taking their daily regimen of anti-retroviral treatment.

Your donation will allow us to continue to provide a life changing summer camp experience to children living with HIV in Haiti. All donations matter and every donation makes a difference.
